Are plant-based diet safe for pregnancy & breastfeeding?
Plant-based diets can be safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding if well-planned to meet the nutritional needs of both the mother and the developing baby.
Nutrient Adequacy: Studies have shown that appropriately structured plant-based diets can provide sufficient nutrients required during pregnancy and breastfeeding, including folate, iron, calcium, and essential vitamins. Research published in the Journal of Perinatal Education indicates that pregnant women following a plant-based diet can achieve adequate nutrition with proper planning and supplementation.
Health Outcomes: Research published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology revealed that as the proportion of animal products in diets decreased and the proportion of plant-based products increased, the risk of women experiencing hypertensive disorders of pregnancy decreased as well. Additionally, studies have found that women consuming vegetarian diets during pregnancy are less likely to have excessive gestational weight gain compared to non-vegetarian women. However, it is important to mention that protective effects of plant-based diets disappear in the presence of micronutrient deficiencies. A recent systematic review, demonstrated that well-planned and supplemented vegetarian and vegan mothers are capable of producing breastmilk that has appropriate levels of essential nutrients for babies growth and development.
Reduced Disease Risk: Plant-based diets have been associated with a lower risk of certain pregnancy-related complications, particularly gestational diabetes.
Micronutrient Profiles: Plant-based diets rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes provide various micronutrients, antioxidants, and fibre, contributing to overall health. Research published in Nutrients highlights that these diets offer beneficial phytochemicals that support maternal health during pregnancy and may be beneficial in the management of gestational diabetes and reduce blood glucose in pregnant women.
While evidence suggests the safety and potential benefits of plant-based diets during pregnancy and breastfeeding, it's crucial for expectant or breastfeeding mothers to plan their diets carefully, ensuring adequate intake of essential nutrients. Our specialised vegan and plant-based dietitian can assist with personalised guidance and regular monitoring to support optimal maternal and infant health.
